Snow art

On a very appropriate note...

Simon Beck creates snow art by walking in very intricate, large-scale patterns. From close up, they don't look like much:

but from far away, they're pretty mind blowing:

...not to mention, very fleeting creations.

While You Were Sleeping...

For German photographer Paul Schneggenburger's series The Sleep of the Beloved, he took long-exposure photos of couples sleeping between the hours of midnight and 6am. He asks,

What happens to lovers while they are sleeping? Is it a sleeping just next to each other, each on his own, or is there a sharing of certain places or emotions? Is it a nocturnal lovers' dance, maybe a kind of unaware performed tenderness, or does one turn their back on each other?

 The resulting photographs are incredibly beautiful and somewhat haunting portraits of coupledom.

Classical Greek Hipsters

Designer Alexis Persani and photographer Leo Caillard photoshopped modern clothes onto photographs of classical sculptures for their project Street Stone. The resulting looks would be right at home on Bedford Ave. Turns out, hipsters and classic Greeks have more in common than one might think—namely, facial hair and indifferent expressions. The only problem is that no hipster would ever be this muscular...and maybe for a bit more authenticity, those photographs should have been taken using Instagram.

BIG ❤s for V-Day

I love the concept behind BIG Design's Valentine's heart sculpture. From the description:

For four years, Times Square has hosted an annual heart sculpture to celebrate Valentine’s Day, selecting a special architect to design a romantic public art installation in Times Square for all to enjoy.

This year’s 2012 Times Square Valentine heart sculpture is “BIG ❤ NYC” by BIG Design, which utilizes the flow of people, air and movement to bring its heart to life. More people = more love. A BIG red heart pulses with glowing light in a grove of glass rods. Bigger crowds make the heart burn brighter.

A single person can activate the beating heart, but joining hands with others will make the heart beat even faster to create a brightly burning heart.

The 10-foot tall glowing sculpture consists of 400 transparent, LED lit, acrylic tubes that form a cube around a suspended red heart. The transparent tubes refract the lights of Times Square, creating a cluster of condensed city lights around the heart.

Lisa Nilsson uses paper and the gilded edges of old books to create these beautiful anatomical illustrations in her Tissue Series. Stunning...and must be very time-consuming.

Sky box

Daniel Mihalyo and Annie Han created these installations in Washington state along the border of Canada. As "billboardless billboards," they frame the sky, making art out of nature. Read more about the project here.

Open Daybook

The Open Daybook is a calendar/journal/sketchbook. 365 artists contributed to the book, each creating a work of art for his/her assigned day of the year. The rest of the page is left blank, inviting the owner to contribute notes, sketches, or daily schedules. Because there is no year on the book, it can be used year after year as a perpetual calendar until the owner runs out of space. From the website, "As the owner of the book doodles, plans for the future and records the past, a second book is created, a collaboration in which each artist’s day becomes the owner’s day as well." Nice.
