One of the first things I love to do when going to someone's apartment for the first time is check out his/her bookshelf. It tells so much about a person. In this vein...Bookshelfies! A goofily titled tumblr of selfies of people in front of their bookshelves. Uh huh. You know the nerd in you loves it.

Senior Library

I love, love, love Louise Fili Ltd's book design for SVA's Senior Library, which masquerades as a box of chocolates. The design was illustrated from scratch, along with much of the lettering. As usual, beautiful work from her studio.

Tree of Codes

Jonathan Safran Foer's Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is one of my very favorite books, so I was excited to hear about his new project, a beautifully designed "interactive" book. The book, Tree of Codes, uses a preexisting text (The Street of Crocodiles) along with intricate die cuts to create a new text. The reader can interact with the pages to unfold the new story. Hooray for books like this one proving that print is still alive and valuable! Check out more information on the book here.

Well-(RED)

For this awesome series, Penguin and (RED) (the AIDS awareness organization) teamed up to create redesigned covers for 8 Penguin Classics. Each features a quote from the book in a typographic treatment across the front.

For the record, I loved The House of Mirth when I was in high school...

Around the world

In Around the World with the Bodoni Family, Teresa Monachino uses the typeface Bodoni (one of my personal favorites) to create an alphabet of travels. For instance, she places a series of Bodoni A's to look like mountains in her depiction of the Alps; uses a leaning I to signify Italy; and places D's to look like mouse ears for Disneyland.
