Moving sculptures

Check out these 3D printed sculptures by John Edmark, which appear to be moving when spun under a strobe light. I could watch these for hours. More here.

Animography

Check out Animography, a series of animated typefaces. Smart and well done!

Animography Opening from Animography on Vimeo.

From their site:

Animography.net is a webshop/typefoundry that provides motion designers, video-editors and others in the field of the moving image with animated typefaces. These animated typefaces are easy to use, customizable and scalable without any loss of quality.
Our animated typefaces are Adobe After Effects files with each glyph in a separate composition. A controller-composition serves as a central point from which you can customize all the glyphs in one go.
Check it out here.

Argentinian artist Sol Linero makes great, retro-inspired motion pieces.

Now I lay me down to sleep...

What do you think about before you fall asleep? This project by Trollbäck + Co. illustrates those thoughts. My favorite was Anna's, pictured below. Though I don't think I think about any of the same things they do.

Megan Feehan

Earlier this week, I went to the AIGA: Fresh Blood event. One of my favorite thesis presentations was by Megan Feehan of the RISD MFA program. She looked at how typography and language intersect and did various experiments examining this intersection.

In one such experiment, she opened a jpeg image in Text Edit and repeatedly changed the code to see how it would impact the image. She then compiled the changed into a flipbook, a video of which can be seen here.

She also made a beautiful poster from the results of these alterations.

You can also see her other thesis explorations, including an insecure alteration of the Futurist Manifesto and a folded alphabet, along with various other projects, on her website.

Luke Harris

Luke Harris is a recent Yale MFA grad who concentrates on designing motion pieces. I especially like his awareness of rhythm and how music impacts his pieces.

Matt Smithson

The other night, I went to Five Plus Five, an event at the Art Directors Club.
One of the presenters was Matt Smithson, whose work is incredibly awesome. He designed The Girl Effect, which I posted about here a long time ago, but he showed some of his other pieces at the event. My favorite motion piece he showed was (drive to) cut your hand off, which you can view here, but be sure to check out all his other work (including his illustrations) on his website.

The Secret Powers of Time

Here's an animation by RSAnimate of Philip Zimbardo's interesting talk about how different people's "time perspectives" affect the way they view the world.

Clemens Kogler

You should stop what you're doing and watch Austrian artist Clemens Kogler's awesome videos. He uses lots of hand-crafted techniques and ends up with a look unlike most motion graphics I've seen before. Take a minute to visit his site and I swear you won't regret it.

Vanishing Point

How cool is this video? It's so pretty and fun to watch, and it hurts my head to think about how long it must have taken to make. Give it a watch...

Urban Abstract

Here's a pretty motion project, entitled Urban Abstract. It's a bit difficult to describe, so you need to watch it for yourself, but the artists describe it as a "journey across urban space" that's "a bit like abstract surfing" I especially like the beginning of the video; I like when digital design has an organic look to it. Click the link above to view the project.

I Met the Walrus

"I Met the Walrus" is an animated account of 14-year-old Jerry Levitan's interview with John Lennon in 1969. Levitan worked with director Josh Raskin and illustrator James Braithwaite to create this video using his original recording and wonderful motion graphics. The video was nominated for the Academy Award for Animated Short in 2008.
