Help Remedies + bone marrow registry

Filed under brilliant ideas, Help Remedies has partnered with Graham Douglas of droga5 to create an easy way to sign up for the bone marrow registry. As a result of their collaboration, packages of "help: I've cut myself" bandages now contain sign-up kits to enter the bone marrow registry.

Bone marrow matches are notoriously difficult to find, but can often save the lives of those suffering from cancer. Douglas aims to make signing up for the donor registry as easy as possible. Someone cuts his finger, goes to find a bandage, and before applying one, can swab a bit of his blood and send it to the lab in the enclosed envelope. He's then registered, without having to visit a doctor or have blood drawn unnecessarily.

It doesn't hurt that the product is well designed and looks good on the shelf. The collaboration is a great example of design thinking + aesthetics to help the greater good.

Bold Bald

Steph Devlantes rebranded bald. That's a success if I ever heard one.
Also, her other work is good, so check it out.

Kristen Haff

Kristen Haff designed this tea packaging for Bigelow as part of a student project. The first concept was to be marketed as a mass market product, while the second was a more upscale product.

The rest of her portfolio is also really awesome, and I love the page icons she has on her site for each of her projects.

Bobble

The Bobble is a reusable water bottle with a carbon filter. It's made of recycled plastic (not BPA) and is good for 300 refills. Smart.

No bull

How great is this letterpressed coffee packaging designed by Jeff Holmberg and printed by none other than Studio on Fire for Bull Run Roasting Company? Each label is rubber stamped and hole punched according to the variety. I heart Midwestern design.

The Optimist

While we're on the topic of wine bottles...check out this promotional piece for Siquis, a riff on "glass half empty/half full."

When someone tips the bottle to fill a glass, the "half full" side is face up, while the "half empty" side is face up as the bottle sits on the table. To top it off, the label was letterpressed and kiss cut at Studio on Fire.

Buddy up

Buddy Mulled Wine is clever packaging for a holiday greeting/gift.

Water water everywhere

Though I'm not keen on disposable water bottles these days, there are some really nice designs showcased over at The Dieline.

This first one is designed by one of my favorites, Louise Fili, who specializes in hand-drawn type for food packaging and restaurants.

I also liked this bottle by Paul Smith for Evian using his classic stripes.

Mind the GAP

Great packaging from GAP UK:

Designed by GAP Studios | Country: United Kingdom

“San Francisco, summer 1969, Doris & Don Fisher created GAP with the simple idea of “jeans and disc”, a place for everyone to find a great fitting pair of jeans. 40 years on, GAP 1969 concept store in Kingly Court celebrates this heritage with a collection of exclusive denim styles, T shirts, and designer collaborations. 69 units of each only. Each pair is packaged in a 12 Inch Gap 1969 record sleeve.”

Coffee talk

I love these coffee packages by Bluefish Branding—especially the sacks.
As described by them:

"MOSAIC™ was developed for the most serious of coffee drinker. The connoisseur in search of full body and a robust full flavour. It is a very strong coffee. Let’s say it is not for the faint hearted.

We developed a branding device to reflect this philosophy and roughly spray painted it directly on any packages, giving the brand immediate gravitas and a notable visual difference (as well as pointing to the very hand crafted nature of the product).

There was then an extension to the series with the addition of a 3 sku pack contained in a miniature semi-recycled sack. Old sacks are used and roughly stencilled with large design, then cut up and sewn into three 250g pack sacks."

Tea Time

Another nice food package: Orla Kiely for Bewley's Tea, a package that would surely be reused instead of thrown away. I'm a big Orla Kiely fan (as evidenced here)...and a big tea fan, too.
