Tesco Home Plus

Here's a smart and awesome idea: Tesco Home Plus, a grocery chain in Korea, devised a way for people to buy groceries while waiting for the subway. They've created graphics that look like supermarket aisles along the station walls. People can use their phones to scan QR codes printed on each "item" in the aisle, which adds the item to their cart. They can then pay and have their groceries delivered to their house. It's like FreshDirect on steroids!

Tesco's argument is that because Koreans are hard workers, they have little time to do their grocery shopping. This system allows for an efficient use of time. Read more here.

Peter Peter Pumpkin Eater

The weather this evening was calling for something warm & cozy, and I decided it was a sign I should make pumpkin chocolate chip muffins (obviously...?). I used this recipe (pouring into muffin tins instead of loaf pans and reducing the time to 25-30 minutes), and they are utterly delicious. Now I just have to stop myself from eating the entire batch in one sitting.

Mmmmm.

Om nom nom.

*Random note, in case you happen to be interested: These are the silicone muffin "tins" I use, and I highly recommend them. They're reusable and you just put them on a cookie sheet, so you don't have to store a muffin pan in your (inevitably small NY) apartment.

Food, Inc.

Food, Inc., a movie about the food industry, sounds good. NYTimes blog The Moment describes it as similar to "An Inconvenient Truth," providing

a captivating if slightly disturbing presentation of a problem. The problem this time is America’s messy food system. The film takes us through supermarkets, corn fields, chicken coops, slaughterhouses and courtrooms to reveal the inner workings of a giant food-producing-machine, resulting in a powerful wake-up call for consumers.

Recession cupcakes

According to Grub Street, Billy’s Bakery will give out free coffees with purchase (between 7 a.m. and 11 a.m.) and a coupon for a free cupcake with purchase (from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.) at its new second location this Saturday. They'll also be doling out free samples of other baked goods.
The new digs are located at 75 Franklin Street near Broadway.

Likened to an "Etsy for food," Foodzie is a site that sells food products made by small artisan producers. The site aims to change people's eating habits by allowing producers to reach customers directly, rather than working through other distribution channels. In addition to featuring lots of delicious looking food products (see below), the site includes interviews with many of the producers themselves.

Pizza pizza

I would like to go here.

It's all Greek to me...

It seems rarer and rarer that I find a restaurant I'm really excited about in NY, but I was pleasantly surprised by my meal at Pylos this weekend.

Defining itself as "rustic Greek home cooking," the restaurant offered up some traditional Greek menu items (saganaki, moussaka) with a twist (moussaka was artichoke-based instead of eggplant-based; meatballs were filled with bits of rice).

The atmosphere is comfortable yet trendy, with exposed brick walls, wine racks as room dividers, and hundreds of terra cotta pots hanging from the ceiling.

The low point was waiting for a table when we had a reservation (at 10:30 p.m., no less), but the wait was worth it...and didn't ruin my chances of returning.
