Song of the week

An oldie, but goodie.

Getting carded

I need to design myself a business card, and I've been keeping my eyes open for inspiration.
Card Observer archives tons of great examples that have gotten my creative juices flowing. If only I could decide which direction to go!

The Pursuit of Happiness

Maira Kalman's illustrated blog "And the Pursuit of Happiness" for the NY Times is great fun to look at and read. If I had all the time in the world, I would love to steal this idea. But alas, I do not.
As a sidenote, Maira's illustrations are also featured in Strunk & White's illustrated reissue of The Elements of Style, which I was dying to get my hands on when it came out a few years back. Grammar + great illustrations? It couldn't get much better for me (and yes, I know and accept that I am a huge nerd).

Curves ahead

I love the packaging for Living Proof's "No Frizz" products. The bottles are simple, sleek, and modern without feeling cold or boring. Instead, their curves keep them friendly, while their simplicity allows them to stand out on the shelf. It's incredibly difficult to conceptualize something so simple yet at the same time so unique.

There was a young woman who lived for her shoes...

Oh, how I love these shoes by Chie Mihara. Because, you know, I don't own enough shoes already.

Everything is amazing right now and nobody's happy...

I can't embed this video for property reasons, but definitely head over to YouTube and check it out. Louis C.K. talks with Conan O'Brien about how spoiled we are—technologically and economically—as a generation. Hilarious and so, so true.

One man show

Wow, this is pretty awesome.

It's all Greek to me...

It seems rarer and rarer that I find a restaurant I'm really excited about in NY, but I was pleasantly surprised by my meal at Pylos this weekend.

Defining itself as "rustic Greek home cooking," the restaurant offered up some traditional Greek menu items (saganaki, moussaka) with a twist (moussaka was artichoke-based instead of eggplant-based; meatballs were filled with bits of rice).

The atmosphere is comfortable yet trendy, with exposed brick walls, wine racks as room dividers, and hundreds of terra cotta pots hanging from the ceiling.

The low point was waiting for a table when we had a reservation (at 10:30 p.m., no less), but the wait was worth it...and didn't ruin my chances of returning.

Annual report

Below are some spreads from the annual report I created for the AIDS organization ACRIA for my Typography II class. It's still a work in progress, but this is the version I turned in last week. I never realized how incredibly time-consuming and difficult it is to create an annual report—I definitely have much more of an appreciation for annual reports now.

My concept was "Erase AIDS," which was shown on the cover (I'm still working on refining my cover, so I'll post that later). I depicted this concept throughout the report through typography by cutting off/"erasing" portions of the words delineating each section of the report.

I'm still figuring out how best to post pictures on Blogger, but here's my best attempt for the time being! Click on the images to enlarge them.

Madewell for shopbop

Madewell, J. Crew's lower end, more casual brand, has a new collaboration with shopbop.

I like Madewell--especially since it was originally my brother-in-law's grandfather's brand--but I'm a little confused by the pricepoints of their collaborative line. My guess is that if people are going to pay $200 for jeans, they'd be more likely to spend it on a designer brand.

Song of the week

I heard this song on a compilation and I can't get it out of my head...thoughts?

Decanter banter

What a nice, clean-looking way to serve wine or water to your lovely houseguests.

Photo finish

I like these photographs by Matthew Tischler, which are featured on 20x200. It's no surprise his $20 prints have already sold out!

Trading faces

Ever since that Michael Jackson "Black or White" video in the early '90s, things like this video totally captivate me.

Orla Kiely for Target

I love Orla Kiely, and her new line for Target is no exception. I only wish they had chosen to make some of her accessories (handbags, wallets), too. Some of my favorites are below. Hopefully I can get to a Target soon...

Chocoholic

I want to make this! It looks both delicious and easy. Any takers? :)

Song of the week

Onto my second "song of the week."
I just got the new Animal Collective album last week, and this is definitely the catchiest song of the bunch.

(Animal Collective, "My Girls")

Oh baby.

French photographer Thierry Bouรซt takes pictures of newborns in their first days of life. They are some pretty crazy and amusing looking creatures!

Got you covered

The Book Cover Archive is a fun resource to peruse. Lots of great images, and lots of great books.

Light my fire

I've always loved Valentine's Day, despite the commercial hoopla that surrounds it.
I'd be happy to receive one of these matchbox valentines!

The six-figure middle class

This article about the high price of living in NY is frightening.
Some of the study's scary findings:
  • A New Yorker would have to make $123,322 a year to have the same standard of living as someone making $50,000 in Houston.
  • In Manhattan, a $60,000 salary is equivalent to someone making $26,092 in Atlanta.
  • The average monthly rent in New York is $2,801, 53% higher than San Francisco, the second most expensive city in the country.
Ouch.

A brunch hunch

I ate brunch at Jarnac this morning and I have to say I highly recommend it.
Friendly staff, good food (I recommend the eggs รก la Bricke), good cappuccino, $10 unlimited mimosas or bloody Marys, and a fun location. I'll be returning!

Everything is illuminated

I think I'm in love...with a lamp.
Saw the lamp below at Brooklyn Flea this weekend and I might have to have it for the following reasons:
1. I have a thing for lightbulbs with visible filaments (I don't know either...) and have been trying to find some good ones to put in my apartment.
2. This summer, I searched far and wide for a beaker big enough to use as a fish tank...but couldn't find one.
And alas, this lamp combines both of these things.

The same booth had an amazing coffee table made out of vintage letterpress type. I can't copy the image, but click here to check it out (photo #2)
Sigh. I can't wait until I have a paycheck.
